Eight Schools (line)
11"x14" marker and watercolor on Bristol
This piece is a reference to (and about) the eight schools of magic in the game Dungeons & Dragons. The piece is divided into eight sections by implied lines. In the upper left hand corner is the Abjuration school; representing the bending lines of a force field. In the orange segment in the upper middle is Conjuration; represented by a line moving from A to B with a background map of arrows representing other forces. The section in the upper right with the sun and eye represent Divination magic; the eye seeing “below the surface”. Back to the left the green wand represents Enchantment magic. The middle blue section with the palm and blast represents Evocation magic. To the right of that, the indigo section uses the real life Muller-Lyer optical illusion to reference the magical school of Illusion. The black section has a leafless tree to evoke the school of Necromancy. The violet section has a line changing to a circle (and back) to show the Transmutation school. In addition to the literal lines, the cells are also held in an order by their color. Moving in their alphabetical order (Abjuration, Conjurations, etc.) through the order of the colors of the rainbow. The exception being Necromancy, which is both the western color of death (black) and is “out of the order” as death is a departure from life.
